AFPs are molecules that, when activated, transition to a new fluorescent state that produces a high degree of contrast. They can also undergo noticeable changes in their spectral characteristics when exposed to light of a particular wavelength and intensity. While certain PAFPs undergo photoactivation—a transition from a dark to a bright fluorescent state—others undergo photoconversion, which is a change in fluorescence color.
